EGTA acts as a metal ion chelator like EDTA. It can chelate 2-valent metal ions except Mg2+, and is commonly used as a complexing agent and masking agent for measuring trace metals in volumetric analysis and photometric analysis. It also titrates barium, strontium, copper, magnesium, and zinc.
EGTA is the most widely used calcium-selective chelator for the determination of calcium in the presence of magnesium. "Because it forms complexes with calcium ions that are 100,000 times more stable than those with magnesium ions, it can be used to measure calcium ions in the presence of magnesium ions." It is also used to prepare calcium buffers and to control the concentration of calcium ions. It is commonly used as an inhibitor of protease as EDTA. It can also be used to eliminate the inhibitory effect of heavy metal ions on the enzyme.
