Description:
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that mainly inhibits the growth of anaerobic bacteria, including Clostridium difficile and Bacillus fragilis. The mechanism of action is that it is a drug precursor, which can be selectively reduced to living form by anaerobic bacteria, covalently bind to DNA, destroy its double helix structure, thus inducing DNA chain rupture, inhibiting bacterial nucleic acid synthesis, and eventually leading to bacterial death. Using its properties of inducing DNA breakage, it can be used to study DNA damage and repair. In addition, it has been reported that it can induce Brachyspira hyodysenteriae to produce the gene transfer factor VSH-1.
