Neutral red, also known as dimethyldiaminophenazine chloride or toluene red, is a green crystalline powder that is easily soluble in water and turns red, while it turns yellow when soluble in ethanol. Its solution can be used to stain vacuoles in cells, where live cells are stained red while dead cells remain unchanged. It can also be used to stain the nucleus of fixed tissue slice and cell samples.
