The C4 neuron fluorescence probe is a fluorescent probe for membrane potential. The C4 neuronal fluorescent probe is chemically identical to the molecule of FM 1-43. In the literature, this membrane marker is also referred to as "FM 1-43". It is a water-soluble film probe belonging to the styryl dye family. It is widely used in cell biology and neurobiology because it is less toxic to cells. This water-soluble dye is non-toxic to cells and hardly fluoresces in water-soluble media. It fluoresces brightly when inserted into the outer layer of cell membrane. In neurons that actively release neurotransmitters, the dye is internalized in recyclable synaptic vesicles, resulting in bright staining of nerve ends. Prior to imaging, non-specific staining of the cell surface membrane can be easily removed by washing.
