EDANS is one of the favored donors developing FREt-based nucleic acid probes (such as molecular beacons) and protease substrates. In FRET based probes, EDANS are usually paired with DABCYL or DABSYL. Its fluorescence is sensitive to the environment. EDANS C5 Maleimide is a mercaptan reactive EDANS derivative. It is water-soluble and has the same spectral properties as EDANS.
