FITC-Dextran is used as a fluorescent tracer compound for cardiovascular, microcirculation, perfusion, monolayer cell culture, and membrane permeability studies, supporting the measurement of blood flow, membrane damage, vascular drainage, and renal processes. It can also be used for microcirculation and cell permeability studies using microfluorescence, and can be used for perfusion studies in animals. FITC-Dextran has also been used to study the porosity of plant cell walls and capillary permeability. Plasma proteins have been shown not to bind to FITC-Dextran. Small molecules of FITC-Dextran are also commonly used to measure processes such as endocytosis and cellular connectivity permeability. The 20kDa FITC-Dextran can be used to study cellular processes such as endocytosis and osmosis, endothelial or epithelial monolayer porosity, apical basolateral movement within the cell layer, cell connection permeability, and drug release from structures such as hydrogels and collagen microrods.
