BAPTA is a water-soluble and cell-impermeable calcium chelating agent. BAPTA, as a calcium ion indicator, is highly selective to calcium. BAPTA is a calcium-specific amino polycarboxylic acid. The presence of four carboxylic acid functional groups makes the binding of two calcium ions possible.BAPTA is widely used as an intracellular buffer to study the effects of Ca2+release from intracellular storage or influx through membrane Ca2+permeability channels.BAPTA also inhibits the activity of phospholipase C, independent of its calcium chelating properties.
