EGTA (1, 2-bis (o-aminophenoxy) ethane-N, N, N’, N’ -tetraacetic acid) is a water-soluble and cell-impermeable calcium chelating agent. It is highly selective for calcium. Compared with EDTA, EGTA has a lower affinity for magnesium and a higher selectivity for calcium ions. EGTA is the most widely used calcium ion selective chelating agent. It forms complexes with calcium ions that are more stable than those with magnesium ions. It is used to prepare calcium buffers and control the concentration of calcium ions. EGTA, AM is an acetyl methyl derivative of EGTA, which can be easily loaded into cells by AM method.
