Bean lectins are the name of a family of lectins, each of which consists of four subunits. There are two different types of subunits. One appears to be primarily involved in erythrocyte agglutination and is designated as the E subunit (erythrocyte agglutinin). Another type is involved in lymphocyte agglutination and mitotic activity and is known as the L subunit (leukocyte lectin). These subunits combine to produce five heteroglectins. PHA-L has four L subunits and does not agglutinate red blood cells, but is a potent mitogen. Fluorescein-labeled PHA-L has the appropriate amount of fluorescent dye to provide the best staining properties for this lectin. The conjugated compound basically does not contain uncoupled fluorescent dyes. The maximum excitation wavelength is 495 nm and the maximum emission wavelength is 515 nm.
