LCA recognizes sequences containing α-linked mannose residues, but recognizes other sugars as part of the receptor structure, making it more specific than ConA. α-linked fucose residues attached to the n-acetylchitosaccharide portion of the core oligosaccharide significantly enhance the affinity. By taking advantage of this stronger specificity, glycoproteins and glycopeptides can be subfractionated with LCA after initial separation using ConA. Fluorescein-labeled LCA has the appropriate amount of fluorescent dye to provide the best staining properties for this lectin. The conjugated compound basically does not contain uncoupled fluorescent dyes. The maximum excitation wavelength is 495 nm and the maximum emission wavelength is 515 nm.
