Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is located in the outer layer of the membrane, and in non-encapsulated strains, it is exposed to the cell surface. They contribute to the integrity of the outer membrane and may protect cells from bile salts and lipophilic antibiotics. The product was extracted by phenol under the strain ATCC 13027
