Rpmi-1640 was developed by Moore et al. in 1967 at Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) in Faro, New York, USA. RPMI is a type of cell culture-medium developed by the institute, and 1640 is the culture-medium code. The RPMI-1640 is an improved version of the McCoy. s5A culture-medium, which uses a bicarbonate buffering system, differs from most mammalian cell culture-medium in its typical PH8 formulation. RPMI-1640 was originally specially designed for lymphocyte culture, and is now widely used in the culture of various normal cells and cancer cells, especially in the culture of suspended cells, and is one of the most widely used media. This product contains amino acids, vitamins, inorganic salts and other ingredients required for cell culture, but does not contain proteins, lipids or any growth factors, so this product should be used with serum or no serum additives.
