Transferrin is the major iron transfer protein in plasma and provides the iron required for cellular internalization and cell metabolism. Studies have found that all cell growth is dependent on transferrin. Not only does normal cellular metabolism depend on iron in its biologically active form, but iron is also a cofactor for enzymes such as RNA polymerase and DNA synthetase. It is also an important component of hemoglobin. Transferrin is a plasma glycoprotein. Each transferrin molecule can bind two iron ions through its C-terminal and N-terminal structural sites, so transferrin exists in three forms: Deiron (unbound iron ions), saturated iron (bound to two molecules of iron ions), and partially saturated; under physiological conditions, only one third of the transferrin molecule is saturated with iron.
The product was prepared from a eukaryotic expression system containing a highly efficient expression of human transferrin gene by fermentation, isolation and highly purified in chemically defined medium, followed by lyophilization.
This product was lyophilized from a protein solution containing 10mM phosphate pH 7.2.
