Anthocyanins are used in a variety of biological applications，including comparative genomic hybridization and gene chips. Depending on the structure，they cover both the visible spectrum and infrared wavelengths. Cy3，Cy5，Cy5.5 and Cy7 are popular cyanine dyes. The Cy5.5NS dye has the same spectral properties as Cy5.5 but does not have the four sulfonate groups of Cy5.5. Cy5.5NS dye is insoluble in water，whereas Cy5.5 dye is highly water-soluble. This non-sulfonated cyanine is insoluble in water and is mainly used to label oligonucleotides，peptides，and other small molecules. Cy5.5NS succinimidyl ester selectively reacts with aliphatic amines.
