Glutathione peroxidase (GPX, EC 1.11.1.9) is an important peroxidase-degrading enzyme that widely exists in the body. It can catalyze the reaction of glutathione (GSH) with peroxides and reduce peroxides to hydroxyl compounds, thereby protecting cells from free radical damage.
Glutathione peroxidase catalyzes the reaction of GSH with peroxide to form oxidized glutathione (GSSG). GSSG reacts with NADPH to form GSH under the action of glutathione reductase (GR). NADPH has a characteristic absorption peak at 340 nm. The rate of absorbance decrease in the reaction system is linearly related to the activity of glutathione peroxidase. The kit calculates the activity of GPX by measuring the consumption of NADPH per unit time.
