Description: Chitosan is a linear aminoglycan consisting of approximately 20% beta 1, 4-linked n-acetyl-D-glucosamine, and approximately 80% beta 1, 4-linked D-glucosamine (GlcN), prepared by partial deacetylation of chitin in hot lye. Insoluble in water, carboxylated chitosan is carboxylated and soluble in water.
Uses: Chitosan is a biocompatible, bacterial-resistant and biodegradable polyelectrolyte, which has a wide range of biomedical and industrial applications. Its chemical properties and low toxicity can be used as a component of drugs, for use in gene transfer systems, as a biodegradable membrane and as a skeleton in tissue engineering.
