The molecular structure of cyclodextrin is formed by more than 6 dextroses connected by α-1, 4 glucoside bonds in a barrel-like shape. A hydrophobic cavity is formed in the barrel, which can absorb hydrophobic small molecules or groups of a certain size and shape to form a stable non-covalent complex. Cyclodextrins can bind with many kinds of guest because of their special structure of hydrophilic outside, hydrophobic inside and excellent non-toxic properties. Cyclodextrins that consist of six, seven, and eight glucose monomers connected by alpha-1, 4-glucoside bonds are called α-cyclodextrins, β-cyclodextrins, and γ-cyclodextrins. β-cyclodextrin is one of the most effective inclusion materials known, the most widely used of the three types, and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
1, α-cyclodextrin: six sugars, molecular weight is 972.86. Hexagonal flake or acicular crystal. Specific rotation [a]D+150.50
2, β-cyclodextrin: seven sugars, molecular weight is 1135. White powdery crystal. There are holes in the molecular ring structure, hole diameter 0.7-0.8nm, and various organic compounds can be formed. Specific rotation [a]D+162.0
3, gamma-cyclodextrin: eight sugars, molecular weight is 1297.14. Tetragonal or rectangular rod-like crystals. Melting point 267℃ (decomposition). Specific rotation [a]D+177.40
β-cyclodextrin has a wide range of uses, and the following categories are listed for reference only
1. The use of cyclodextrins in the pharmaceutical industry can generate inclusion compounds (encapsulated) with drugs, which can stabilize (1) unstable drugs; (2) deliquescence, adhesion or liquid drug powder; (3) insoluble or insoluble drugs can be dissolved (solubilized).
2. Use in the pesticide industry cyclodextrin encapsulation is stable, and some pesticides can be stored and improve insecticidal effectiveness.
3. Uses in the food industry Cyclodextrin is used in the food industry and has the following functions: (1) elimination and cover up of specific odors; (2) Improvement and improvement of food organization structure; (3) the reduction and removal of bitter taste; (4) Antioxidant effect; (5) Maintenance and improvement of flavor.
4. Use in the daily chemical industry. Cyclodextrins can also be used as emulsifiers and quality improvers in cosmetic manufacturing. It also has deodorization (such as bad breath) and anti-corrosion effects, can be used in the manufacture of toothpaste, dental powder.
5. Other uses can be used as a treatment agent for oily sewage in environmental protection. The aqueous solution of cyclodextrin is used to clean the oil tank, and the waste liquid can be recovered and treated to obtain fuel oil.
6. Use of cyclodextrins in the field of chemistry Cyclodextrins are a valuable chemical reagent. When it is present, the fluorescence intensity of the fluorescent pigment will increase significantly, so it can be used for protein and amino acid analysis; It can also be used to separate long chain organic compounds, racemes and so on.
In addition, adsorbents made from cyclodextrins can be used as adsorption for chromatographic analysis.
