Description: Biochemical studies.
Properties (The following information is for reference only) : white crystalline powder, a derivative of mannose with a hydroxyl group at position 6 replaced by hydrogen, that is, 6-deoxy-L-mannose. Soluble in water and methanol, slightly soluble in ethanol, it crystallises in two forms, alpha and beta. The α-form contained one molecule of crystalline water, which was lost after heating and transformed into the β-form (molecular weight 164.16). The β type is extremely hygrophilic and converts to the α type in air. The common one is α-L-rhamnose, which has a sweet taste and exists as a pyran in aqueous solution.
