Acetylsalicylic acid, a derivative of salicylic acid, is an irreversible inhibitor of COX1 and COX2. Irreversible acetylation with serine residues at 530 of the COX-1 active site polypeptide chain in cyclooxygenase (COX) leads to COX inactivation, which then blocks the conversion of AA to thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and inhibits PLT aggregation. COXs is a key rate-limiting enzyme in the production of TXA2 and prostaglandin I2 (PGI2) by AA, and there are two forms of COX-1 and COX-2 in the human body, COX-1 is inherent to PLT.
