Physiological function of progesterone
1. Maintain a female's pregnancy, and lead to pregnancy animals appear a series of physiological changes, such as inhibiting female estrus.
2. Promotes the thickening of the endometrium, the curvature of the glands, and the increase in secretory function.
3. Inhibit uterine peristalsis, and make cervical contraction, secretion of viscous liquid, etc. These physiological changes provide suitable environmental conditions for the operation, growth and development of the early embryo and the continued growth of the fetus after the implantation.
4. A small amount of progesterone and estrogen cooperate to promote estrus in maternal animals. Progesterone, in concert with prolactin, promotes the development of the mammary gland.
5. Pregnancy hormones involved in the hypothalamus and pituitary of feedback adjustment, the coordination and balance animal reproductive hormones. In vivo levels of progesterone are less than 1 ng/ml in the follicular phase of various domestic animals, about 4 ng/ml in the luteal phase of cattle, and about 18 ng/ml during pregnancy.
