Background |
It is a sialic acid monosaccharide ubiquitous on the glycoproteins of cell membranes and glycolipids of mammalian ganglioglycerides, and plays a biological role in neurotransmission, leukocyte vascular extravasation, and viral or bacterial infection. |
Biological Activity |
N-Acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), a type of sialic acid, has close links with cholesterol metabolism and is often used as a biomarker in evaluating the risk of cardiovascular diseases. [2] |
In Vivo |
Administration of NANA by both oral and i.p. routes resulted in significantly more cerebral and cerebellar ganglioside and glycoprotein NANA than did glucose injection(with the exception of cerebellar glycoprotein NANA after NANA intubation).[1] Neu5Ac prevented HFD-induced hyperlipidemia and associated hypercoagulation in rats through regulation of lipid-related and coagulation-related genes and,by extension, induced metabolite and protein changes.[2] |
Animal Experiment |
Rat pups were administered N-acetylneuraminic acid(NANA)by i.p. injection or via a feeding catheter for eight consecutive days beginning on d 14 of life. All pups were given the identical dose: 1.0 mg on d 1 and 2 and 1.2 mg on the remaining days,or approximately 20 mg/kg body weight per day. A control group was injected i.p. with glucose instead of NANA. On the morning of d 25,pups were decapitated, and the heads were frozen immediately in liquid nitrogen. The brains were later dissected and analyzed for both cerebral and cerebellar ganglioside and glycoprotein NANA.[1]Sprague Dawley male rats were divided into five different groups and fed with HFD alone,HFD low-dose Neu5Ac,HFD high-dose Neu5Ac,HFD simvastatin(10 mg/kg day),and normal pellet alone. Food was given ad libitum while body weight of rats was measured weekly. After 12 weeks of intervention, rats were sacrificed and serum and tissue samples were collected for biochemistry and gene expression analysis,respectively.[2] |
