It is an endogenous heptapeptide in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) that has cardioprotective effects due to its anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic activity in cardiomyocytes. Angiotensin 1-7 acts as a local co-regulator of kinin-induced vasodilation by inhibiting angiotensin-converting enzyme and releasing nitric oxide. Angiotensin 1-7 has been reported to inhibit purified canine angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity. Angiotensin 1-7 blocks Ang II-induced smooth muscle cell proliferation and hypertrophy and shows anti-angiogenesis and growth-inhibiting effects on the endothelium.
