xylan is a polyfive-carbon sugar, which is a hemicellulose. It is linked by xylose red β-1, 4-glycosidic bonds. The structural unit of xylan is xylose. The long chain of xylose connected by xylosidic bonds forms the main chain. Some groups on the main chain are replaced by side chain groups, such as acetyl group, arabinose group, galactose group, glucuronyl group, coumaric acid, ferulic acid, etc. Xylan is then connected with other plant components such as cellulose, lignin, and pectin through side chain groups to form a dense structure, which together forms the supporting skeleton of the plant body.
