6-CFDA is a live cell fluorescent tracer probe that is permeable to cell membranes and can be loaded into cells for incubation. Once inside the cell, the non-fluorescent 6-CFDA is hydrolyzed by intracellular esterase to 6-carboxyfluorescein, producing fluorescence. These fluorescent products can only accumulate in cells with intact cell membranes. Therefore, dead cells cannot be stained. 6-CFDA labeling can be used to detect cells by fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry.
