DiOC6(3) is a cell permeable green fluorescent lipophilic dye and a widely used membrane potential dye. At low concentrations, DiOC6(3) is selective for mitochondrial staining in living cells. At high concentrations, the dye can stain the inner lining of other organelles, such as the endoplasmic reticulum, in living or stationary cells. In addition, DiOC6(3) has also been used to study the interactions and dynamics of endoplasmic reticulum structures in neurons or yeast.
