DAF-2 is widely used to detect nitric oxide (NO) in cells. Daf-fm is an improved version of DAF. Compared with DAF-2, DAF-FM is a more sensitive and stable fluorescence probe for NO detection. In addition, DAF-FM is much less sensitive to pH than DAF-2 and is essentially pH independent over the physiological pH range. DAF-FM is not cellular permeable, but it does not need to be activated by cytoplasmic enzymes.
