Oxazole yellow is a non-cell-membrane penetrating, high-affinity green fluorescent dye for carbonyl anthocyanin monomer nucleic acid, which is essentially non-fluorescent in the absence of nucleic acid. The dye can be used to identify apoptotic cells. Oxazole yellow can penetrate into early apoptotic cells and stain early apoptotic cells, while propyl iodide (PI) (a dead cell stain) remains non-permeable to early apoptotic cells but can stain late apoptotic cells. When used together, the two dyes can distinguish early and late apoptotic cells.
